Announcer has called over 400 fights
NEW YORK — Boxing announcer Jim Lampley has renewed his contract with HBO Sports for another three years.
Called “the signature voice of HBO Sports,” Lampley started his career with HBO by announcing the March 20, 1988, heavyweight-championship bout from Tokyo between Mike Tyson and Tony Tubbs.
Over the years at HBO, Lampley has called more than 400 fights, announced Wimbledon tennis matches for 11 years and served as a senior correspondent on the monthly series “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.”
Lampley, who’s president of his own Los Angeles-based production company, Crystal Spring Prods., will host a 12-part HBO documentary chronicling the most noteworthy fights HBO has cablecast since it opened for business in November 1972. HBO has scheduled the docu for the spring of 2003.
