HBO rolls ‘Carnivale’

Cabler orders 12 segs of skein starring Stahl, Brown, DuVall

HBO has picked up its eerie Dust Bowl drama pilot “Carnivale” as a series, ordering 12 episodes in addition to the recently completed pilot.

Production is expected to get under way in late summer or early fall for a debut likely in the first half of 2003 on the pay-cable network.

Series, like the pilot, will be shot in the Santa Clarita Valley. It’s an epic story of good and evil involving the experiences of a traveling carnival troop in the mid-1930s.

Creator Dan Knauf, who is repped by APA, will serve as scribe-exec producer; 3 Arts’ Howard Klein will exec produce with Scott Winant; and Henry Bromell has come aboard as exec producer-showrunner. Dan Hassid is supervising producer.

Rodrigo Garcia directed the pilot, and HBO hopes to see him helming additional episodes.

“In the Bedroom’s” Nick Stahl, who also will star as John Conner in Warner Bros.’ “T3: Rise of the Machines,” leads the cast. Other thesps on board include Clancy Brown, Clea DuVall, Tim DeKay, Michael Jay Anderson, Patrick Bauchau, Adrienne Barbeau and John Fleck.
