Teen ‘Idol’ worship

Young aud surge fuels Fox's 'American' wave

Three weeks from its finale, Fox’s summer hit “American Idol” drew its largest aud yet Tuesday, boosted by a surge in teen viewership.

According to Nielsen, “Idol” averaged 12.67 million viewers, the largest for any reality program this summer and the biggest series audience for Fox in Tuesday’s 9 o’clock hour since October 2000 (“Dark Angel”). It easily topped its all-repeat competish in every ratings category.

Music talent show boosted its viewer total by adding a bunch of teens — climbing to a new high of 6.0/22. In this demo, “Idol” continues to do boffo biz with females (9.2/30) and only so-so with males (2.9/12).

“Idol” was basically flat vs. recent weeks in adults 18-49 (6.2/17) and adults 18-34 (7.0/21) and figures to again rank as the week’s top program in both categories.

‘Monk’ bows well on ABC

Elsewhere on Tuesday, “Monk,” the new drama series on cabler USA that’s being repurposed for four weeks on ABC, did pretty well in its Alphabet debut.

Hourlong averages topped its best scores to date on USA in total viewers (7.10m vs. 4.91m) and adults 18-49 (2.6/7 vs. 1.9/7). “Monk” outdrew a repeat hour of NBC’s “Frasier” in total viewers and a repeat of CBS drama “The Guardian” in key demos.

At 8:30, NBC’s “Rerun Show” continues to perform OK, finishing third in 18-49 (2.3/7) but building upon its repeat “Just Shoot Me” lead-in (1.8/6). It did better in adults 18-34, tying for second with a 2.5/8 and growing by 56% from “Shoot” (1.6/6).

And at 10, NBC’s “Dateline” delivered the best 18-49 score for any newsmag (4.3/12) since the May sweep. Hour included a Katie Couric interview with Priscilla Presley.

Fox again won the night by all key measures.
