Tavernier’s ‘Safe’ to open City film fest

DGA proud of French relations

Bertrand Tavernier’s “Laissez-Passer” (“Safe Passage”) will kick off the sixth annual City of Lights, City of Angels Film Festival in Los Angeles April 8 at the Director’s Guild of America.

The Cesar-winning director will introduce the U.S. debut of his pic, which has already garnered star Jacques Gablin the best actor award at the Berlin Film Fest and a Cesar nom for co-star Charlotte Kadi.

The French cinema showcase, co-sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund and France’s Assn. of Authors, Directors and Producers (L’ARP), spotlights 10 French features to a steadily growing American audience. A record 4,000 participated in the fest last year.

“The Directors Guild of America is proud of its role in this collaborative partnership that each year spotlights the best and most creative artists in French filmmaking,” DGA prexy Martha Coolidge said. “We are looking forward to hosting the City of Lights, City of Angels Film Festival screenings and experiencing ourselves the best of French cinema right here in Hollywood.”

“L’ARP is thrilled to participate in this event for the promotion of French film in Los Angeles and to introduce films which reflect the richness and diversity of French creativity,” L’ARP prexy Coline Serreau added. “To bring French film beyond France’s borders is also an objective of L’ARP.”

Serreau’s “Chaos,” starring Catherine Frot and recent Cesar winner for female newcomer Rachida Brakni, will close the fest April 13. The helmer-scribe will attend a Q&A after the screening.

Tickets are available to the general public at the DGA box office. For details, visit the fest’s Web site at www.cityoflightsfestival.org.
