Showtime books ‘Jasper’

Pic based on '98 Byrd murder

NEW YORK — Showtime has greenlit docudrama “Jasper, Texas,” with cast Jon Voight, Louis Gossett Jr. and Joe Morton.

Pic is based on the 1998 racially motivated murder of James Byrd Jr., who was chained to a pickup truck and dragged to death. Film takes a look at how the small town struggled in the subsequent media spotlight.

Jonathan Estrin will exec produce and script. Jeff Byrd will direct. Showtime creative exec Pearlena Igbokwe will oversee the project.

Doc “Two Towns of Jasper” touched on the same topic and made the festival rounds this year before landing at PBS.
