Tax breaks around the world

Money available per film: From a direct-funding scheme, up to circa $650,000. From distribution aid, around $250,000 maximum. From an international co-production fund, around $100,000.

Contact: Instituto de Cinema Audiovisual e Multimedia (ICAM, Portuguese Film Institute); Pedro Berhan Da Costa, president, ICAM, Rua S. Pedro de Alcantara, 45, 1º, 1250 Lisbon, Portugal. (351) 21 323-0800.

Limitations: Only Portuguese companies can apply for ICAM aid. The ICAM currently faces a cash crisis. It is extremely rare for a film with a non-Portuguese helmer attached to snake direct funding. More interesting is distribution aid, where the ICAM will match minimum guarantees put up by a Portuguese distribber — with payment made to the local distribber. International co-production coin is usually channeled into niche co-productions with France, Spain, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa.
