NEW YORK — Showtime has signed Richard Dreyfuss and Judy Davis to star in an original movie called “Coast to Coast” to be directed by Paul Mazursky.
The project, based on a novel of the same name by Frederic Raphael, is a drama with comedy about a married couple, played by Dreyfuss and Davis. The pair travels cross-country to attend their son’s wedding. Raphael is adapting the story for the screen.
Mazursky’s last movie as a director was HBO’s “Winchell,” the biopic about the celebrated gossip columnist Walter Winchell.
Dreyfuss is no stranger to starring roles in original TV movies, having played the secretary of state Alexander Haig in “The Day Reagan Was Shot” for Showtime last year and the title role in HBO’s “Lansky” (1999). He also played the president of the United States in the CBS remake of “Fail Safe” (2000).
Davis’ recent TV movies include the role of Judy Garland in the ABC miniseries “Life With Judy Garland: Me & My Shadows” (2000) and of the author/playwright Lillian Hellman in “Dash and Lilly” for A&E in 1999.
Production on “Coast to Coast” is scheduled to get underway during late summer or early fall, with the premiere on Showtime expected some time next year.
