Steve Carlston, one of the final holdovers from UPN’s previous management team, has departed the weblet.
Carlston, who had served as executive vice president of distribution at UPN since March 1999, will continue to serve as a consultant for the Viacom-owned network on a limited basis, including some affiliation negotiations.
With CBS taking over management of UPN, much of Carlston’s oversight had already been transferred to Eye affiliation relations prexy Peter Schruth. Viacom execs searched for other opportunities for the exec within the company, but both sides ultimately decided to part ways.
“There’s only so much room in these corporate structures,” Carlston said. “They’ve been good about trying to retain me and keep me in the Viacom family.”
Under Carlston’s watch UPN’s distribution grew from 81% to almost 91% of the country, restoring most of the netlet’s gaps in nationwide coverage.
“I enjoyed every minute of it,” he said.
Carlston hopes to take some time off as he ponders his next move. The exec previously served as president and COO of SF Broadcasting, which was later acquired by Emmis Broadcasting. Before that he was VP and general manager at Fox’s KSTU-TV, Salt Lake City.
