HBO’s “Band of Brothers” soldiered past 77 other entries to capture the first Emmy for interactive TV programming, TV Academy chairman Bryce Zabel announced.

A jury of 15 professionals chose the winner. The plaque for outstanding achievement in interactive TV, single-screen enhanced, will be presented during the Emmy engineering awards presentation Sunday at TV Academy headquarters.

“Band of Brothers,” based on Stephen Ambrose’s nonfiction bestseller, followed a U.S. Army airborne unit in Germany during WWII. Interactive elements delivered factoids and details about the program during the broadcasts. Viewers also could dig into more than 50 character bios, an episode synopsis, WWII timeline and other material.

“We are very proud that we were able to introduce this new award, as it further extends the Academy’s recognition of the increasing importance of interactive media and its role in enhancing and extending the television viewing experience for the public,” Zabel said. The large number of entries “proves the important and growing role of interactivity in television.”
