Academy to fete Fernandez as person of the year

See nomineesColombia’s Carlos Vives, the tropical singer who spent the ’80s in TV and the ’90s making albums, leads the way in the third annual Latin Grammys with six nominations for his EMI album “Dejame Entrar” and its title track.

Salsa singer Celia Cruz, who has already won two Latin Grammys, was second with four noms.

Nominations in the 41 categories were announced Wednesday in Beverly Hills for the Sept. 18 ceremony that will take place at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Nabbing three noms each were Panamanian vet Miguel Bose, producer Emilio Estefan, last year’s big winner Juanes, former child star and composer Gian Marco and Spain’s Alejandro Sanz. With two each were the Colombian rock band La Ley, Brazilian guitarist-songwriter Dori Caymmi, Circo and Sin Bandera.

Competing for record of the year are Vives’ “Dejame Entrar,” Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao,” La Ley’s “Mentira,” Gian Marco’s “Se Me Olvido” and Sanz’s “Y Solo se me Occurre Amarte.”

The tunes from Vives, Cruz and Sanz are also up for song of the year; the other nominees are Juanes’ “A Dios le Pido” and Bose’s “Morenamia.”

Album of the year nominees are Vives’ “Dejame Entrar,” Bose’s “Sereno,” Cruz’s “La Negra Tiene Tumbao,” Sanz’s “MTV Unplugged” and the only Brazilian up for one of the big four awards, Ivan Lins’ “Jobiniando.” New artist nominees are Cabas, Circo, Gian Marco, Jorge Moreno and Sin Bandera. Recordings were eligible if released between April 1, 2001, and March 31, 2002.

The Latin Grammys, selected by the Latin Recording Academy, are hoping for a far smoother run this year than last. After the academy announced that Miami would be the host city for the awards, protests led it to move the ceremony to the Forum in Inglewood. Scheduled for Sept. 11, event was postponed after the terrorist attacks and eventually held, untelevised, at the Conga Room nightclub in Los Angeles.

Boost for Latin music

“This TV show takes place when Latin music is suffering economically,” chairman of the board of trustees Manolo Diaz said. “But on the 18th of September, some Latin artist will become an international idol.”

The first, and only, Latin Grammy telecast was jam-packed with performances, the most striking coming from Shakira, the latest in a line of Spanish-singing performers looking to cross over into the American pop marketplace.

Ricky Martin’s perf on an earlier Grammy telecast generated a similar spark, but for the most part, the so-called Latin invasion has come to a standstill; the vast majority of the artists are regional stars.

Two categories were added to this year’s slate: contemporary tropical album and Christian album. The Latin Academy will fete the ranchero king Vicente Fernandez on Sept. 17 as person of the year.

The Latin Grammys will be televised live on the East Coast by CBS and tape delayed in the West.

And the Latin Grammy noms are . . .
