Ms Dynamite wins U.K.’s Mercury

Debut beats Bowie, Streets, Barker

LONDON — Rapper-singer Ms Dynamite’s debut album, “A Little Deeper,” won the U.K.’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize Tuesday night.

The 21 year-old, whose real name is Niomi Daley, beat out David Bowie, Doves, garage group and bookie’s favorites Streets, newcomers The Coral, jazz vet Guy Barker, and six other highly-regarded acts at a ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House hotel.

Ms Dynamite is the first solo black female to win the £20,000 ($31,000) prize. She is in addition up for six Mobo Awards, which are specific to black musicians, in October.
