Bon Jovi kicks off NFL season

Band also to play during halftime

It will be Bon Jovi, not Bono, who will lead the Times Square kickoff.

Gotham tabs had previously announced that U2 — who had performed at the Super Bowl last year — would be the topliner at this year’s Times Square party to usher in the 2002 football season.

Bon Jovi also will play during the game’s halftime show to promote the band’s upcoming album “Bounce.”

Billed as the “world’s largest tailgate party,” music and football-themed event will take place Sept. 5, before the San Francisco 49ers take on the New York Giants. Less than a week before the first anniversary of 9/11, festivities also will include a nod toward memorial events.

Other skedded performers will be announced at a later date.
