Thesp will write, perform music for 'Alyx'
Madonna and Guy Oseary’s Maverick Films and Erich Van Lowe’s Sweet Lorraine Prods. have pacted with ABC/Touchstone to develop a music-themed series starring “The Practice’s” Marla Sokoloff.
The potential hourlong drama series “Alyx” centers on the life of a 17-year-old pop star who decides to leave behind the glamour and the ghost-written songs to pursue her dream of becoming a real musician.
Madonna, Oseary and Van Lowe (“The Cosby Show,” “Roc”) will executive produce, along with Melissa Rosenberg (“Boston Public,” “Birds of Prey”), who will write the pilot.
Sokoloff, who will next star in indie feature “The Tollbooth,” writes and performs her own music in addition to her acting work. Credits for the thesp-musician, who is repped by the Gersh Agency, also include the feature “Dude, Where’s My Car?” as well as a guest turn on “Friends” as Joey’s little sister.
Her music is expected to be a component in “Alyx.” In fact, Maverick Records A&R exec Danny Strick is working with Sokoloff to develop her music.
“It’s important to develop both areas at the same time,” Oseary told Daily Variety.
“Alyx” is the first TV series project to come from Los Angeles-based Maverick Films, which Madonna and Oseary founded in 2001 and Mark Morgan heads as prexy. However, the company also is developing another small-screen project, the VH1 telepic “How to Be the Perfect Latino Popstar” (Daily Variety, Sept. 9).
“We’ve sold many movies in the last months since Mark’s been here, and yet TV ideas are coming out of the film company, too,” Oseary said. “So it’s been a very fruitful company.”
Maverick Films’ first feature, “Agent Cody Banks,” starring Frankie Muniz for MGM, is due for theatrical release in March.
Brad Bredeweg and Amber J. Lawson of Stage 3 Studios created “Alyx,” and Sweet Lorraine Prods. VP Susie Singer Carter brought it to Maverick Films’ Morgan and VP Brent Emery.
Maverick was repped in the deal by UTA. Marathon Entertainment reps Stage 3 and Sweet Lorraine. Rosenberg is repped by the Rothman Agency.
