Red-hot musicvideo helmer Dave Meyers — whose resume includes hit clips by artists as diverse as Jay-Z, Mick Jagger and the Dave Matthews Band — is expanding into series TV, inking an exclusive one-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.
Pact, valued at mid-six figures, calls for Meyers to develop and direct both drama and comedy pilots for the studio. Oren Koules and Mark Burg — Meyers’ managers at Evolution, which brokered the deal with Endeavor — are on board to serve as producers of any projects the helmer ultimately works on.
Meyers, 29, is one of the most prolific — and in-demand — musicvideo helmers working today, with a credit list that reads like an A-to-Z of MTV’s greatest hits of the past five years.
Helmer is often called on to direct the first single from an artist’s album, most recently directing premiere clips from Mary J. Blige (“Family Affair”), Celine Dion (“A New Day”), Jay-Z (“Izzo (H.O.V.A.)”), Aerosmith (“Girls of Summer”), Janet Jackson (“All For You”), Dave Matthews Band (“I Did It”), Missy Elliott (“Get Ur Freak On”) and Creed (“My Sacrifice.”)
20th Century Fox TV topper Dana Walden said the studio looked forward to translating Meyers’ musicvid skills to series television.
“He has such a track record as a storyteller in videos, and his style is so original,” Walden told Daily Variety. “The breadth of videos he’s directed, in terms of style of music, is all over the place, and yet there’s a consistency in his ability to tell a story in a short amount of time and create star presence out of the artists.”
Meyers said he believe his creative instincts were in sync with the types of programs 20th is interested in producing.
“They’ve always been the most cutting-edge studio out there, so I think it’s a great match for where I’m coming from,” he said. “I’m real excited about it.”
Meyers said his small-screen series faves have ranged from “Star Trek” and “The X-Files” to “The Simpsons” and “Miami Vice.” As for what type of projects he’d like to develop, he said he’d like “to do a character-based piece that’s youth culture-oriented as well as a visual action or supernatural type show.”
Helmer last month snagged five MTV Video Music Awards, having tallied a record 16 noms. Meyers earned statuettes for his work on the J. Lo/Ja Rule collaboration “I’m Real,” Pink’s “Get the Party Started” and No Doubt’s “Hey Baby.”
In addition to his small-screen work, Meyers is also preparing to move into features. He’s attached to direct the DreamWorks family actioner “Topsiders” and Revolution’s “The Owl.”
