Bush honors arts veterans

Douglas, Cash, Anaya among National Medal of Arts recipients

HOLLYWOOD — President Bush’s first National Medal of Arts selections include Kirk Douglas, Mike Nichols and Johnny Cash.

Others honored are cellist Yo-Yo Ma, writer Rudolfo Anaya, painter Helen Frankenthaler, choreographer Judith Jamison and the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation.

Bush will present the awards at a ceremony skedded for April, where he also will hand out the National Humanities Medal to authors Tom Wolfe and Richard Peck, music scholar Eileen Jackson Southern, writer William Manchester, educators Sharon Darling and Robert Coles, illustrator Jose Cisneros and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Medal of Arts honor was established in 1984, the National Humanities Medal in 1988.
