Williams shines on opening night
HOLLYWOOD — Husband-and-wife duo Vanessa L. Williams and Rick Fox dominated Feb. 10 opening night of the fairy-tale musical “Into the Woods” at the Ahmanson.
While Williams captivated onstage as the evil witch, Los Angeles Laker Fox drew eyes in the aud, although some hoped he wasn’t going to sit directly in front of them in the theater.
At the after-party held in the courtyard plaza outside the theater, Williams said it wasn’t a completely family event yet, as she hadn’t brought the children to see it.
The production has been one of those where she could have a lot of fun, Williams added. “Working with this cast is as close as in a workshop.”
Writer-director James Lapine said he and the team were still tweaking the musical, scheduled for a Broadway opening in April (in time for Tony consideration) at the Broadhurst.
For example, Lapine said people expect to see the beautiful Williams earlier in the show.
Chad Kimball, who plays the cow Milky-White, said the costume department was still making bovine changes.
“A couple of days ago, they ordered me a new udder,” he said. (Alys Marshall contributed to this report.)
