‘Opposite’ attracts musical

Roos, Besman, Roth working on legit adaptation

The makers of 1998 comedy “The Opposite of Sex” are looking to consummate a stage musical.

Writer-director Don Roos and producer Michael Besman are working with playwright-director Rob Roth (“Beauty and the Beast”) and composer Doug Cohen (“No Way to Treat a Lady”) to adapt Roos’ tart coming-of-age tale about a teen who seduces her gay brother’s boyfriend and runs off with him to Los Angeles.

“Rob called Don and I to take it to Broadway, and after they played us a song or two, we made the deal,” said Besman, who will produce the musical with Roos. Besman teamed with Harry Gittes to produce the Golden Globe-nominated “About Schmidt.”

“They now have the first act completed, with 12 songs,” Besman said. “We will now look for backing, finish the second act and look to stage it in spring 2004.”
