HOLLYWOOD — The Hollywood-based Greenway Court Theater production of “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” garnered eight noms from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle, which salutes legit fare in L.A. and Orange counties.
Also receiving significant consideration were the Deaf West Theater’s revival of the Roger Miller musical “Big River” with six noms, the Black Dahlia Theater preem of “Orson’s Shadow” with six as well and the Matrix Theater revival of “The Birthday Party” (five noms). Receiving three noms each were “Do I Hear a Waltz?” (Pasadena Playhouse), “Kimberly Akimbo” (South Coast Repertory), “Pinafore!” (Celebration Theater), “Much Ado About Nothing” (South Coast Rep) and “Every Day Life” (Pacific Resident Theater). Recipients of the six special awards presented annually include the Costa Mesa-based South Coast Rep, which garnered nine LADCC noms for 2001. It will receive the Margaret Harford award for sustained excellence in theater. South Coast Rep also preemed “The Beard of Avon,” which garnered the Ted Schmitt playwriting award for scripter Amy Freed. The 33rd annual Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards ceremony will take place April 1 at the Colony Theater in Burbank.
