The William Morris Agency has signed a “Ring” master: Japanese helmer Hideo Nakata, best known for helming the Japanese-lingo suspenser “Ringu” (The Ring) has signed with the agency for representation in all areas.
Made for only $1.5 million, Nakata’s “Ringu” became the highest grossing horror franchise in Japanese history. Pic’s being remade at DreamWorks with Gore Verbinski helming and Naomi Watts starring.
Other Nakata-helmed pics like “Dark Water” and “Chaos” are being readied for English-lingo remakes with U.S. producers: “Water” is set up at Bill Mechanic’s Pandemonium with producers Doug Davison and Roy Lee; “Chaos” is being produced by Laura Bickford, Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal. Both projects are out to writers.
