‘Sex’ object of IFC desire

Cabler's distrib arm obtains U.S. rights to 'Comedy'

HOLLYWOOD — IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Catherine Breillat’s “Sex Is Comedy,” the opening-night selection of the Directors’ Fortnight in the Cannes Film Festival.

Produced by Jean-Francois Lepetit for Flach Film, “Sex Is Comedy” was written and directed by Breillat and stars Anne Parillaud (“La Femme Nikita”) and Gregoire Colin. Parillaud stars as a film director struggling to balance the emotional wear and tear of filmmaking.

“It’s a very smart comedy about the creative process and sexual politics,” said Bob Berney, senior VP of marketing and distribution for IFC Films.

In Cannes, Berney and Sarah Lash, director of acquisitions, negotiated the deal on behalf of IFC, with Eric Lagesse repping Flach Pyramide.
