The eighth Sundance Brazil Screenwriters lab will be held Aug. 6-10, with John Cameron Mitchell, Trey Ellis and Jessica Bendinger on hand as script advisers. Other international advisers are Mexicans Maria Amparo Escandon and Beatriz Novaro.
Sundance waded through 186 applicants for this year’s lab, and as in years past, most participants are experienced filmmakers.
Event will be held in the mountain town of Nogueira, outside Rio, and is sponsored by commercial social service SESC, the Rio State Culture Secretariat and the Brazilian Audiovisual Institute.
The lab will open in Rio first with the local preem of Anna Muylaert’s “Durval Discos,” a script from the 1998 lab.
Films that have emerged from the labs have included some of the most important local productions that secured international distribution, including “Central Station,” “Me, You, Them,” “The Trespasser” and “City of God.”
