Pic marks market's fourth highest opening day of all time

SYDNEY—- Continuing its run of record-shattering bows, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” posted awesome first day figures in Australia.

Launched Thursday on 486 screens, the “Potter” sequel conjured $A2.37 million ($1.3 million), an opening day record for a Warner Bros. film, beating the original by 10%.

That was the market’s fourth highest opening day of all time, the second best ever excluding previews, and the biggest non-holiday.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” holds the first day record with $2.2 million, followed by “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” ($1.68 million) and “Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace” ($1.4 million), all with sneaks.

“Chamber of Secrets” looks likely to overtake the $5.09 million four-day haul of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”
