'Resurrection,' Harring, Anthony, Shakira nab awards

See winners“Pinero” triumphed Saturday at the 2002 American Latino Media Arts Awards, nabbing three Almas, including motion picture.

Other winners from Miramax’s “Pinero” camp were Benjamin Bratt, feted for his portrayal of poet-playwright Miguel Pinero, and scribe-helmer Leon Ichaso, who took home the screenplay nod.

Kudocast, presented by the National Council of La Raza, honors artistic achievement and the enhancement of the Latino image in entertainment.

Show was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Actor-comedian Paul Rodriguez emceed the evening.

Forty awards were passed out in the areas of film, TV and music, 20 of which were presented during the telecast — skedded to air June 1 on ABC. The non-televised categories were announced Friday at the NCLR Pre-ALMA Gala held at the Biltmore Hotel.

Joining “Pinero” in the winner’s circle was Marc Anthony, who garnered Almas for male performer, performance in a music, variety or comedy special (“Christmas at Rockefeller Center”) and Spanish-lingo album of the year (“Libre”). Shakira won for album of the year (“Laundry Service”) and female performer categories.

Other Alma victors included “Mulholland Drive” thesp Laura Elena Harring (actress in a motion picture); “Spy Kids” helmer Robert Rodriguez (director of a motion picture); “Amores Perros” (foreign-lingo film); “Resurrection Blvd.” (TV series); and “No Turning Back” and “The Blue Diner” tied for independent motion picture.
