'Tribute' producer, organizer to receive inaugural award

HOLLYWOOD — The Producers Guild of America has tapped Joel Gallen, producer and organizer of “America: A Tribute to Heroes,” with its first Visionary Award.

The accolade, honoring work of a “unique or uplifting” quality in TV or features, will be presented at the 13th Annual Producers Guild Awards March 3 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

The tribute show aired Sept. 21 and generated more than $150 million.

Unity moment

PGA Award co-chairs Bruce Cohen and Debra Hill said, “In a time of crisis and tragedy, ‘America: A Tribute to Heroes’ provided a singular opportunity of national reflection and unity and deserves the recognition of this inaugural award from the Producers Guild.”

Gallen was previously VP of production for MTV New York. He now works out of his L.A.-based Tenth Planet Prods., where he continues to produce the “MTV Movie Awards.” He recently made his directorial debut with Columbia’s “Not Another Teen Movie.”
