Miramax to do own German distribution

Teutonic distribs weakened by Neuer crash

MILAN — Miramax Films is to distribute its own movies in Germany, hiring its own local staff to handle releases through Buena Vista Intl.

This decision has been taken by newly elevated COO Rick Sands because of the weakness of the German indie distrib sector, reeling from the crash of the Neuer Markt and crisis in TV sales.

The creation of a Miramax unit within BVI’s German arm follows the template laid down by the company for selected films in Italy.

In France, Miramax has gone a step further by forming a distrib joint venture with broadcaster TF1. The company has also been holding meetings with distribs and broadcasters to explore new distribution routes in Spain.
