COLOGNE — A three-part miniseries about author Thomas Mann will pick up 11 Grimme Awards, the top Teutonic TV nods, on Saturday.
The Bavaria Studio production will grab the gold for screenplay, director (Heinrich Breloer), camera, and six actors, including Armin Mueller-Stahl as Mann. Pic is an unusual mix of drama interwoven with documentary material and eyewitness interviews covering the Nazi era and the U.S. years of the family that spawned four renowned writers.
Stefan Krohmer’s drama “End of Season” will receive four golden Grimmes.
While pubcasters dominate the ranks of winners, commercial channel Sat 1 will be honored for “Wambo,” a biography of assassinated Bavarian actor Walter Sedlmayr, and “Dance with the Devil,” a fictional version of the kidnapping of industrial heir Richard Oetker.
Arte snatched the golden prize for documentary with Nino Kirtadze’s “Once Upon a Time in Tchechenia.” Kudos are handed out by the Adolf Grimme media research institute.
