‘La Mancha’ tops doc fest

'Childhood,' 'Bottom,' 'Distance' also to unspool at DOCtober

The U.S. premiere of “Lost in La Mancha” will highlight the Intl. Documentary Assn.’s sixth annual DOCtober in September showcase.

Six short films and 15 features are to be shown Sept. 13-19 on two screens at the Laemmle’s Monica 4-Plex Theater in Santa Monica. Filmmakers will be present for discussion at select screenings.

“Lost in La Mancha” is a behind-the-scenes docu about the harsh realities of filmmaking, focusing on the disasters that struck the set of Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.” Jeff Bridges narrates.

Other selected films include “A Kind of Childhood,” produced by Trudie Styler, which follows several Bangladeshi children who must work to support their parents; “Bottom of the Ninth,” directed by Oscar nominee Chuck Braverman, which profiles minor league baseball players and coaches; and “No Distance Too Far,” which tracks the seven-day, 600-mile-long California AIDS Ride.

Also unspooling at the festival are “Shades of Gray,” a portrait of the Midwest’s gay population; “Terror From Within,” documenting the rise of domestic terrorism in the U.S.; and two films from HBO’s Frame by Frame Festival: “He’s Having a Baby” and “Funny Old Guys.”

Tickets are available several weeks before the showcase’s start at Laemmle’s Monica 4-Plex box office. For more information, call (213) 534-3600.
