Prodigy nabs four Soul Train Music Awards noms

HOLLYWOOD — R&B prodigy Alicia Keys paced the nominations race for the 16th annual Soul Train Music Awards, garnering four noms for her debut album “Songs in A Minor.”

Nominations were announced Thursday by Faith Evans and Shemar Moore at a press confab at Paramount.

Trailing Keys with three noms apiece were India.Arie, the Isley Brothers and the late Aaliyah. Destiny’s Child, Jagged Edge and Jaheim took two each.

Keys, India.Arie and Aaliyah will go head-to-head in two categories: female R&B/soul single and album.

Jackson’s back

Duking it out for male R&B/soul single will be Jaheim (“Just in Case”), Brian McKnight (“Love of My Life”), Musiq Soulchild (“Love”) and Usher (“U Got It Bad”). Jaheim, Soulchild and Usher join Michael Jackson as contenders for male R&B/soul album.

Meanwhile, 112 (“112”), Destiny’s Child (“Survivor”), the Isley Brothers (“Eternal”) and Jagged Edge (“Jagged Little Thrill”) will face off for R&B/soul album, group, band or duo.

Voted by radio-station program directors, recording artists and retail personnel, the Soul Train Music Awards have honored popular soul and R&B artists since 1987.

The 16th annual Soul Train Music Awards will be held March 20 at the L.A. Sports Arena.
