Oz comedy finds star

Rhys Ifans has been set to play the title role in “Danny Deckchair,” a bizarre romantic comedy to shoot in May in Australia, financed by Crusader Entertainment and Cobalt Entertainment. Pic was written and will be directed by Jeff Balsmeyer, who has been a storyboard editor for the Coen brothers and Martin Scorsese.

Ifans (“Notting Hill,” “The Shipping News”) appears in the upcoming “Human Nature,” with Patricia Arquette and Tim Robbins, directed by Michel Gondry.

Airborne hubby

In “Danny Deckchair,” he gets his first real starring role, playing a disillusioned husband who goes airborne by tying weather balloons to his deckchair. He attempts to rediscover his life in the small Outback town in which he lands. Pic reteams Ifans with his “Human Nature” co-star Miranda Otto.

Pic will be produced by Andrew Mason, who has been busy on the sequels to “The Matrix.” Endeavor and U.K.-based Gordon & French rep Ifans, along with Brillstein/Grey.
