Helmer nabs Mandela awards

Singh associated with children's fund since 1995

JOHANNESBURG — South African filmmaker Anant Singh received the Lifetime Founder Member Award of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund on Saturday.

Singh has been associated with the fund since 1995, donating money and organizing fund-raising events such as the South African premiere of “Ali,” attended by star Will Smith. Other big names who have been honored as Lifetime Founder Members are Denzel Washington and Bill Gates. The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was established on June 16, 1994, when former president Nelson Mandela pledged one third of his presidential salary for five years to found the fund that helps to improve the lives of poor children.
