Designer Ferretti to be honored

Main exhibition will include sketches, set models, costumes

CANNES — Italy’s Cinecitta Intl. will team with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences on an exhibition in Los Angeles honoring the work of production and costume designer Dante Ferretti, in Cannes to accompany Martin Scorsese for the first public showing of his designs for “Gangs of New York.”

Following similar joint tributes to Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci and Roberto Rossellini, the exhibition will be mounted at the Academy’s Beverly Hills museum, running Oct. 24-Jan. 5. Special events also will be organized Oct. 25 and 26 at the LA County Museum of Art, to include screenings of film clips highlighting Ferretti’s work.

Main exhibition will include Ferretti’s sketches, set models and costumes from films such as Fellini’s “And the Ships Sails On,” Terry Gilliam’s “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,” Jean-Jacques Annaud’s “The Name of the Rose,” Neil Jordan’s “Interview With the Vampire,” Julie Taymor’s “Titus,” and Scorsese’s “Kundun” and “Gangs.”

Special graphic installations designed to take the observer inside the filmmaking process are being produced in Italy for the exhibition. Ferretti reconstructed vast areas of mid-19th century Manhattan for “Gangs” on the backlot of Rome’s Cinecitta Studios.
