CALCUTTA — Columbia TriStar India has taken another small step into releasing Indian fare in the local market.
Last November, it distributed Mira Nair’s “Monsoon Wedding,” and has just released “Mitr” (My Friend), the directing debut of South Indian actress Revathy Menon. While “Mitr” is in English, Columbia has dubbed half of the prints to reach a wider audience.
Film, manned almost entirely by a femme crew, turns on the lives of Indian Americans, especially women, and was shot on location in California.
“Although Mitr is a niche film, we are still very hopeful of its performance at the box office,” a studio source says.
