'A.I.,' 'Rings,' 'Apes' in the running

“A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “Hannibal,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “Moulin Rouge” and “Planet of the Apes” are in the running for Oscar nominations in the makeup category Feb. 12.

Ten-minute clip reels from each pic will be screened Feb. 9 for the makeup award nominating committee. Members may nominate up to three films for Oscar consideration, recommend a single film for a special achievement award or elect to recommend that no award be given in the category.

The 74th annual Academy Awards will take place March 24 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

In other Oscar news, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences will present an Award of Commendation to Rune Ericson at the Scientific & Technical Awards dinner March 2 at the Beverly Wilshire. The lenser will be feted for his groundbreaking efforts on and dedication to the development of the Kodak Super 16mm film format.
