In a preemptive bid, Universal Pictures and Jersey Films have paid mid-six figures to pick up the pitch “Penny Dreadful: Ghost Detective” from scribe Darin Scott.
U-based Jersey Films will produce the project.
A family pic described as somewhat similar in tone to “Spy Kids” and “Beetlejuice,” “Detective” is the story of a spooky psychic girl who saves her town from an evil witch.
Jersey Films exec VP of production Pamela Abdy and director of development Adrienne Biddle brought it into the company and will oversee pic with U co-prexy of production Mary Parent and VP Tim O’Hair.
At Disney, Scott recently set up the pitch “Glam,” which Debra Martin Chase will produce through her overall production deal at the Mouse House.
Scribe, who is repped by Writers & Artists Agency, recently wrote “Cleopatra Jones” for Warner Bros. He also produced “Menace II Society” and co-wrote and produced urban horror anthology pic “Tales From the Hood.”
