COLOGNE — RTL TV has purchased a film package from distrib Helkon covering the free-TV rights for 12 movies.
Selection includes Jennifer Lopez pic “The Wedding Planner”; “Rules of Engagement,” with Tommy Lee Jones; and French period thriller “Brotherhood of the Wolf.”
RTL said the films are likely to air in primetime on RTL or its sister station Vox.
Although the price wasn’t disclosed, Helkon execs suggested it was in the double-digit, million-dollar range.
On June 25 RTL purchased a large package from Warner Bros., estimated at $200 million, that includes the first “Harry Potter” and “Lord of the Rings” films.
With film prices down in Germany, RTL appears to be on a shopping spree, securing many pics that would have more likely gone to ProSieben.
RTL noted that it had cherry-picked the content of both deals and that the days of output deals are “pretty much over.”
For Helkon, the deal is good news after it announced last week that its losses had more than doubled to $18.6 million in the first nine months due to restructuring and the disappointing performance of “Rollerball.”
Helkon recently sold similar packages to RTL 2 and pubcaster ARD.
