RIO DE JANEIRO — Helmer Fabio Barreto’s new pic “Paixao de Jacobina” (Jacobina) will world preem at Brazil’s 30th Gramado Film Fest, which unspools Aug. 12-17.
“Jacobina” will screen outside of competition Aug. 15.
PlayArt will release the pic in southern Brazil on Aug. 30 and then nationwide on Oct. 11 with 100 to 120 copies, a large opening for a local production.
“Jacobina,” starring Leticia Spiller, is based on the true story of a female preacher who led a religious movement in 1874 in southern Brazil.
Barreto also is in negotiations with indie distribs for a U.S. release and with Wim Wender’s distrib for a German one.
New docu prize
The Gramado fest will feature another 13 films screening outside competition and has added docus to its prize competition for the first time.
Five Brazilian features, four from other Latin American countries, and five docus will compete for the Kikito award.
Fest also will honor television actress Marieta Severo and vet helmer Roberto Farias with special awards.
