RKO Pictures has hired Gregory Hoblit to direct and produce “The Rig,” a script written by Peter M. Lenkov.

Conceived and developed at RKO, “The Rig” is the story of a renegade structural engineer who agrees to examine the problems encountered on the largest oil rig in the world, only to be confronted with tremendous physical and emotional challenges via a presence that no one could have anticipated.

RKO chairman-CEO Ted Hartley will produce with Hoblit. RKO’s Thom Mount and VP of production Peter Morgan will oversee the project for RKO. VP of development Beverly Graf, who brought the project to Hoblit, will oversee the project for his Abilene Pictures.

Repped by the William Morris Agency, Hoblit most recently directed “Hart’s War.”

The CAA-repped Lenkov recently did the production rewrite on “Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever,” which opens today. Other credits include “Demolition Man,” “Son in Law” and the TV series “La Femme Nikita” and “The District.”
