Perelman makes writing, helming debut on D'Works pic
“Swimfan” backer Cobalt Media Group is in final negotiations to co-finance and handle foreign distribution on “The House of Sand and Fog.” Pic stars Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley and will be distributed domestically by DreamWorks.
Cobalt steps in for the CDP Capital Entertainment-backed Signpost Films, which ankled “Sand and Fog” last month as the company began seeking fresh equity. (Daily Variety, Aug. 28)
Budgeted at close to $17 million, “Sand and Fog” will be the feature writing and directing bow of ICM-repped Vadim Perelman, who adapted the script with Shawn Lawrence Otto from a novel by Andre Dubus III. Pic starts production Oct. 4.
Also on board are cinematographer Roger Deakins (“A Beautiful Mind”) and James Horner (“Titanic”), both Oscar winners.
Michael London and Perelman produce the pic with Otto as co-producer.
U.K. rights to “Sand and Fog” have already been nabbed by Miramax.
In addition to seeing “Swimfan” open at No. 1 last weekend, Cobalt recently wrapped the Kevin Costner oater “Open Range,” which will be distribbed by Disney; and “Shade,” produced in conjunction with RKO Pictures.
