‘AKA’ tops kudos as Outfest wraps up

'Fur' flew with two as 15 awards handed out totaling $11K

Outfest concluded its 20th anniversary with a Sunday night kudofest at the John Anson Ford Amphitheater honoring gay and lesbian filmmakers at home and abroad.

Duncan Roy pocketed the fest’s largest cash award, $2,500 courtesy of HBO, for his first feature, “AKA.”

“Queer as Folk” thesps Peter Paige and Bobby Gant, Jennifer Coolidge (“Best in Show”), T.C. Carson (“Living Single”) and director Paris Barclay (“The West Wing”) joined host Bruce Vilanch to present 15 awards and cash prizes totaling $11,000.

Narrative feature “The Politics of Fur” snagged two Grand Jury Awards for lead actress Katy Selverstone and director Laura Nix.

Scribe Sherman Alexie took home a Grand Jury Award for “The Business of Fancydancing” screenplay, while the film’s lead, Evan Adams, garnered the actor nod.

Audience awards went to Yolanda Garcia Serrano and Juan Luis Iborra for “Km. 0,” Deborah Dickson for “Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House,” Pascale Simons for “You 2,” and Melissa Regan for “No Dumb Questions.”

A special screening of Bill Weber and David Weissman’s drag docu “The Cockettes” immediately followed the ceremony. Several original members of the San Francisco performance troupe also arrived in costume for the film’s Los Angeles debut.
