‘Penny’ spec gets cashed by Spyglass

Birnbaum, Barber to produce romantic comedy

Spyglass Entertainment has acquired Andy Bellin’s spec “A Penny Earned” from Maverick Films and Eric Cahan.

Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber will produce the romantic comedy, about a Manhattan debutante who has exhausted her trust fund. Cahan and Maverick’s Guy Oseary also will produce.

Madonna and Zachary Feuer will exec produce for Maverick, with prexy Mark Morgan acting as a co-producer.

Script was picked up by production VP Derek Evans and president Jonathan Glickman for Spyglass.

This is the first script sale for Bellin, a journalist who wrote the HarperCollins memoir/expose “Poker Nation: A High-Stakes, Low-Life Adventure into the Heart of a Gambling Country.”

He and Cahan are repped by the Gersh Agency. Bellin is managed by the Firm.

Maverick is also producing “Feels Like the First Time” for Spyglass.
