'Insomnia' co. wakes up to 'Deathmatch' writer's pic
Alcon Entertainment has acquired the comedy spec script “The Whole Pemberton Thing” by first-time feature scribe Mike Samonek.
Pic, in a somewhat similar vein to “What About Bob?” and “Office Space” centers around the volatile relationship between a young executive and his Machiavellian, oddball officemate. As part of the purchase, Alcon will also get a first look on Samonek’s upcoming feature and TV projects.
“Thing” will be produced by Alcon Entertainment’s co-presidents Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Alcon VP of development Steven Wegner brought project to the company and will oversee development. Pic will be distributed via Alcon’s five-year, 10-pic distribution deal with Warner Bros.
Samonek, a former advertising copywriter, has written for MTV’s “Celebrity Deathmatch” and was a script reader for Alcon. Scribe is repped by Genesis and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka & Finkelstein. Attorney Ron Levin repped Alcon on the deal.
Alcon recently scored a hit with “Insomnia,” starring Al Pacino and directed by Christopher Nolan. Company is in pre-production on teen romantic comedy “If You Were My Girl,” for Warner Bros. Its other credits include “My Dog Skip,” “Dude, Where’s My Car?” and “The Affair of the Necklace.”
