Debuts not up to task, 'Mind' thinks over $100 mil

When the best new releases Hollywood could offer last weekend amounted to such also-rans as “Collateral Damage,” “Queen of the Damned,” “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “Hart’s War,” it’s easy to see why holdovers ruled as the B.O. wilted in most territories.

Showing terrif stamina after its mammoth Easter frame, “Ice Age” is still the pacesetter, racking up $12.5 million from 3,455 screens in 31 markets, propelling its cume to $80.2 million. Its standout tallies include Germany’s $21.6 million (easing by 20%, still No. 1 in its third adventure), Mexico’s $16.2 million (down 25% in its fourth) and the U.K.’s $14.1 million (off 14% in its third).

“Monsters, Inc.” collared $7.8 million from 3,143 engagements in 25 countries, hoisting cume to $234.3 million. Global total ascended to $487.1 million, streaking past “Toy Story 2’s” $484.2 million; pic now ranks as Disney’s third-highest-grossing toon of all time behind “The Lion King” and “Aladdin.” “Monsters” reigned in its sixth lap in Japan, cuming $52.3 million (in yen, outgunning “Pearl Harbor”) and in its third in France, amassing $8.8 million to date.

Among the marathon runners, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” levitated to $518 million (boosted by Japan’s $48.4 million), “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” hit $640.5 million, and “Ocean’s Eleven” reached $256.5 million. WB hailed “Ocean’s” $34.1 million U.K. bounty as its second-highest ever in that market (behind “Harry,” natch) and its haul from continental Europe as its third biggest from that region, trailing only the wiz and “The Bodyguard.” The casino caper threw sevens in Poland, minting $283,000 on 50, more than doubling the bow of “Erin Brockovich.”

Enhanced by its four Oscars, “A Beautiful Mind” crossed $100 million, spurred by Japan’s nifty $4.9 million in nine days (abating by 21%), Italy’s $11 million, the U.K.’s $9.5 million, Germany’s $9.2 million, Spain’s $8.6 million and Australia’s $8.2 million.

“Collateral Damage” shot itself in the foot in the U.K., scraping up $626,000 on 270, but Arnold Schwarzenegger still has a sizable following in Russia, judging by the actioner’s $342,000 opener on 56. Estimated cume in Warner’s markets is $22.6 million. New Line’s “Blade II” clung to top spot in the U.K. despite a typical 47% decline, making a spirited $7.9 million in 10 days, and ranked first in Singapore with $214,000 on 30.

“Queen of the Damned” took an anemic $689,000 on 493 in Germany, but the vampire tale showed more bite in Australia, drawing $834,000 on 164, including sneaks. “Not Another Teen Movie” struck a chord with teens in Germany, mustering $1.7 million on 500, but hasn’t caught on in most other markets except Oz, where it’s pocketed $2.3 million in its third romp.

“E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” reissue saw few close encounters in France, fetching $642,000 on 399, and even fewer in Belgium, but held more allure in Taiwan (clocking $432,000 on 51) and Korea ($457,000 on 61). Steven Spielberg’s fantasy slipped by a reasonable 34% in Mexico, bringing in $2.5 million in 10 days.

After generally soft debuts, pic held reasonably well in its soph sessions, scoring $2 million in the U.K. thus far, $1.4 million in Spain and $659,000 in Hong Kong, but a lousy $940,000 in Germany. Twelve days since its international launch, “E.T.” has phoned in just $12.5 million from 2,623 prints in 21 markets.

“Count of Monte Cristo” was no swashbuckler in Spain (the first major market handled by BVI, which shares foreign rights with Spyglass), making $560,000 on 225. Landing in Taiwan, its first sizable territory, domestic dud “Hart’s War” drummed up a puny $212,000 on 60.
