Inside Move: Buzz-Smith

Helmer delivers biz Poop on new Web site

As if being Red Bank, N.J.’s most prominent director and comicbook store owner weren’t achievement enough, Kevin Smith is now an online entrepreneur, his Net profits financing a new entertainment gossip site.

The site, MoviePoopShoot.com, was first seen in Smith’s “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” as a parody of the fan-boy sites that litter the Web. Now made virtually real, PoopShoot aims to outdo the fan boys with more entertainment scoops, thanks to Smith’s Hollywood connections.

“Kevin loves a lot of different pop-culture sites, but he said he just wants to go to one to get everything,” says editor in chief Chris Ryall.

So Ryall and a dozen columnists range across film, vidgames, toys, comicbooks, DVDs, music, wrestling and TV.

“We’re not trying to do anything new, or reinvent anything, just maybe try to look at things with a bit of an arched eyebrow,” Ryall says.

Despite being created in just two weeks, the site is extensive, with the modest ambition to be better written than its competitors.

Smith’s own inside dirt, however, still will come from the separate ViewAskew.com.

But Ryall can’t complain: Profits from View Askew merchandise, such as “Buddy Jesus” figurines, are financing PoopShoot, obviating any worries about finding a profitable business model.

“The merchandise he sells has been incredibly profitable,” Ryall says. “This site doesn’t need to make any money.”
