UTA’s Absolutely sure

Tenpercentery pacts with TV format distrib

AMSTERDAM — United Talent Agency has inked a one-year deal with Dutch-based Absolutely Independent to represent its 25 formats and a pack of format-creating clients, including Dutch pubcasters NCRV, NPS, VARA, BNN, and companies in the U.S.

Absolutely Independent is a TV format distributor, consultant and agent for around 35 clients, mainly in Europe. Among them is Intellygents, a team of top format creators who left Endemol six months ago; Germany’s light entertainment format specialist Stormy Prods.; and Creative Input, founded by prolific Dutch format creator Joris Van Ooyen and partner Ernst Crebas.

Patty Geneste, owner and managing director of Absolutely Independent, notes that while the U.S. wants formats created in Europe, “There are cultural differences, and we need to match the companies we represent with an agent that understands those differences and can translate them into American standards.”

UTA talent agent Hayden Meyer told Daily Variety that the “Absolutely Independent team had led the way in identifying the very best format television. Its formats are fresh, high concept and promotable ideas at their core.”

Deal marks the first time that many of Absolutely’s clients’ formats will have an opportunity to enter the U.S. market.

UTA is in last-minute negotiations with an undisclosed U.S. producer about a pilot for Stormy Prods.’ “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” and Dutch pubcaster NPS’ quizzer “Daggers Drawn” should also enter the U.S. market.

Formats from the 6-year-old Absolutely are distributed in 30 territories worldwide.
