Too hot for ‘Thermometer’

Remarks get TV host remanded

SANTIAGO — A TV talk-show personality was jailed Jan. 15 for up to five years for “injuring the power of the state” in Chile.

Eduardo Yanez, a featured guest on Chilevision’s popular current events program “El Termometro” (The Thermometer), blasted the judicial system in a recent broadcast, calling Chile’s judges “corrupt, immoral and cowardly.”

Apparently in response, a judge ordered his arrest.

Yanez has begun a hunger strike in protest, maintaining he has committed no crime.
