Indian org to tout toons

Group to rep companies at fests, trade shows, markets

NEW DELHI — The top 40 Indian animation companies will meet in Mumbai on July 4 to form a trade body promoting their industry worldwide.

United Television, Pentamedia, Maya Entertainment, Jadoo Works, Tata Elexis and MUV Studios are expected to attend the first meeting.

The group will rep the companies at world animation festivals, trade shows and markets and actively lobby the government to sign co-production deals with countries such as Canada, France and Italy.

The association also will attempt to attract work from international toon studios. The average 20-minute cartoon short costs $400,000-$500,000 in the U.S. but can be made in India for just $150,000.

Meanwhile, Escotoonz, a New Delhi-based animation house, will seek international funding. Promoted by Escorts, a major Indian business group with interests ranging from construction contracting to telecommunications, Escotoonz employs around 300, 200 of whom are artists working in the company’s studio in Faridabad.
