Young, Dish signals crossed

NBC, ABC affiliates affected

NEW YORK — San Franciscans who pick up their TV signals by satellite through Echostar’s Dish network woke up March 1 to find that the NBC affiliate KRON had vanished into thin air.

The disappearance resulted from an ongoing contract dispute between Young Broadcasting, the parent company of KRON, and Echostar.

The disagreement also spilled over to another Young TV station, WKRN, the ABC affiliate in Nashville. Dish-network subscribers there also will have to make do without “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire” and Peter Jennings’ take on the news of the day, among other ABC bellwethers.

A spokesman for Echostar says the parting of the ways resulted from Young’s demand that Echostar sign up another Young station, KCAL Los Angeles, at an exorbitant monthly license fee.
