Test to be tried in south Florida
MIAMI — Venevision Intl. will launch its pilot distribution of Spanish-lingo pics in the U.S. with Alvaro Fernandez Morero’s “El Arte de Morir” (The Art of Dying) in October.
Miami-based Venevision Intl., part of the Cisneros Group, is looking to expand beyond its core TV distribution and production operations. The test will be conducted in south Florida; if successful, the company will target areas on the East and West Coasts with large Latino populations.
All films will be distributed with English-lingo subtitles and screened in multiplexes and indie theaters. Venevision Intl. has struck accords with exhibs AMC Theaters, Regal and Muvico.
Company hopes to attract a broad audience with a variety of genres, while steering away from the arthouse or social/political productions it feels would have limited appeal.
“El Arte,” a psychological thriller, was a hit in its native Spain last year and was selected after focus groups with local moviegoers.
