Universal Studios Networks U.K. has announced a Feb. 1 launch date for its new library movie channel, the Studio.
The 50/50 joint venture with NTL, Britain’s biggest cabler, initially will be carried on NTL’s analog and digital platforms as part of the basic subscriber package. Negotiations with the U.K.’s other platforms are under way.
On offer will be pics from Universal, Canal Plus, the BBC and Channel 4. Deals with other film studios are pending.
In its first two months, the Studio’s lineup will include “True Lies,” “Basic Instinct,” “The Doors,” “Leaving Las Vegas” and “The Last Temptation of Christ.” About 20% of the channel’s output will be original programming, such as interviews with people in the biz.
Janet Goldsmith, managing director of Universal Studios Networks U.K., who oversees the Sci-Fi Channel, also has taken on responsibility for the Studio.
