U inks Japan TV distrib deal

Library of pics in pact include 'Mummy 2,' 'Pie 2,' 'Grinch'

Universal Studios Television Distribution and Movie Television Inc. have entered into an exclusive, multiyear distrib agreement for free and basic subscription cable TV rights in Japan.

Deal includes firstrun and library feature films and firstrun and library TV movies and series. Among the titles involved are features “The Mummy Returns,” “American Pie 2,” “The Fast and the Furious” and “The Grinch” and TV series “Law and Order” and “Columbo.”

Under terms of the agreement, MTI becomes U’s exclusive free and basic cable TV distrib for these titles in Japan, while Universal retains all other TV rights for titles in the market, continuing to license to pay TV, pay-per-view, video-on-demand and other ancillary outlets.
